Davis focused on dialogue – Cowichan Valley Citizen

Standard

Kerry Davis has been busy canvassing Mill Bay neighbourhoods on his bicycle in his bid to take the Area A seat at the Cowichan Valley Regional District in the November municipal elections.

A former provincial candidate for the Green Party, Davis has thrown his hat into the ring not only because he is interested in politics and giving back to his community, but because he was asked by several people to run, he said.

“The community has been feeling uncommunicated-with,” he said about what he’s been hearing on the doorsteps.

“There should be a lot more community consultation,” he continued, saying if elected he plans to hold monthly community meetings along the lines of those held in Shawnigan Lake by current area director Bruce Fraser.

Other big issues for Davis include water, contaminated soil and transportation.

“They’ve just changed the bus routes for the worse, as far as I’m concerned,” he said. “I can ride my bike from Mill Bay to Duncan faster than I can get there on the bus.”

In a connected issue, he’d also like to see more levels of care for seniors offered in the area, where he says he’s seen people having to move out of their communities as they become unable to live independently.

Davis said he will bring “youth and exuberance” to the board table, along with an ability to work collaboratively. In that vein, he said he’s already been in touch with candidates in other areas to see where there are possibilities for neighbours to work together.
